Yoko Taro Partners With Sega for Wild New Project
By Yung Namahage • 1 year ago

NieR Automata is still relevant as ever with the anime coming out, even if part of it has been delayed due to covid. But that hasn't stopped eccentric auteur from moving on and starting a new IP that's possibly even stranger than the last.

404 GAME RE:SET is the new project he made in partnership with Sega. It's about a dystopian future (of course) where society is ruled by... Sega. Yes, that Sega. Sonic the Hedgehog Sega. The same Sega that fumbled its place in the video game console scene back in '01. Anyway, there are some kinda waifu-ized personifications of classic Sega games for players to collect as fight back against the evil Sega. Casts confirmed so far include:

Virtua Cop

After Burner

Outrun

Virtua Fighter

You can see some more artwork and behind-the-scenes content in this (Japanese) announcement trailer. There are also a few references to Sonic, so you best bet we're getting an officially Sega- and Yoko Taro-endorsed waifu personification of Sonic eventually.

If it isn't obvious already, 404 GAME RE:SET is indeed a mobile game; a gacha one at that. But they are planning for a global release eventually, and of course they'll be adding more Casts based on Sega games in the coming months. Personally, I'm holding out for Altered BeastCrazy Taxi and Yakuza waifus.

404 GAME RE:SET launches this Spring in Japan, with an English version planned afterward. What do you think of Yoko Taro's new project? Could you get behind gajinka Sega game waifus? Which games would you like to see represented in waifu form? Leave your thoughts below!
