Things are moving forward for Lionsgate's upcoming Naruto adaptation since we last spoke about it.
Previously, it was announced years ago that The Greatest Showman's Michael Gracey was set to direct. Now it's been confirmed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will be directing and co-writing the movie, in collaboration with original Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto. Kishimoto said:
"When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto. After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naturo. In actually meeting Destin, I also found him to be an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process."
Shang-Chi is remembered for having some of the best fight scene choreography in the MCU, with greater emphasis on martial arts combat than punching CGI monsters and all that. From that it makes a lot of sense that Cretton was chosen to direct a Naruto movie with Kishimoto's blessing. Cretton is also attached to produce the movie through his company Hisako, along with Arad productions, Jeremy Latcham and Jeyn Munford.
Do you think Cretton could do justice to Naruto? Let us know in the comments!
