Alitabros, we are so back! The acquisition of Twentieth Century Fox by Disney made it uncertain whether the 2019 Alita: Battle Angel, probably the best live-action adaptation of a manga to come out of Hollywood, will ever be graced with a sequel. We've been drip-fed intel saying it may or may not happen over the last few years, but now it's finally been confirmed straight from the horse's mouth. That horse being the movie's writer and producer James Cameron.
In an interview about the ranch he's selling with Forbes, the Titanic and Avatar director candidly dropped the announcement in the middle of discussing filming locations: "...on Avatar, I’m working in Wellington and Los Angeles. And on the new Alita: Battle Angel films, I’ll be working in Austin, so it just didn’t make sense for us anymore."
That's right, film[s], plural. Cameron is determined to make a franchise out of this. The original manga by Yukito Kushiro, released in Japan as Gunm, ran from 1990-1995. It had a sequel series subtitled Last Order from 2000-2014. The third and final part, Mars Chronicle, which is both another sequel and a prequel that explores Alita's past life, started when Last Order finished and is still ongoing. That means there's a ton of source material for Cameron to choose from, but I reckon he'll probably cap it off with a trilogy that sums up the first series.
Spy Kids and Machete director Robert Rodriguez is expected to return for the sequel[s], as are stars Rosa Salazar and Christoph Waltz, reprising their roles as Alita and her father figure Ido respectively. The first movie also teased Edward Norton as villainous scientist Nova, who's kinda like the Dr. Wily to Ido's Dr. Light, so hopefully we get to see him in action in the next movie[s].
We can rest easy now knowing it's been confirmed, but who knows when the first trailer will drop, let alone the release date? I'll be sure to keep an eye out. What do you guys want to see in Alita: Battle Angel 2? Let us know below!
