Fans of 2019's surprisingly decent adaptation of Yukito Kishira's classic cyberpunk manga have been uncertain about whether or not it'll ever get a sequel. Alita holds the honor of being the last movie released by 20th Century Fox before their acquisition by Disney, which left the possibility of a sequel up in the air. Not to get anyone's hopes up, but recent developments mean we're one step closer to seeing Alita return to the big screen.
Producer Jon Landau, who helped release the original Alita as well as James Cameron's Titanic and the Avatar series, has confirmed he's been in conversation with director Robert Rodriguez and Alita herself Rosa Salazar about the possibility of a sequel. He also talked about how Avatar's special effects helped pave the way for the tech that brought Alita to life, and that Way of Water could have a similar effect on Alita 2:
“I think what we've learned from Avatar is how much more facial nuance and subtlety that we can get into characters that we want to be emotional and emote that are humanoid. Alita would not have been possible, but for what we did on Avatar. Avatar: Way of Water would not be what it is but what we did for Alita. And now let's put that back and give it back to Alita..”
Salazar and Rodriguez have both previously talked about wanting to return to the dystopian future of Iron City, as has Christoph Waltz, who plays Alita's paternal figure Ido. Fans have also been vocal about wanting a sequel, especially to see Edward Norton as overarching villain Nova after his uncredited cameo in the first movie.
There may not be any promises just yet but that won't stop me from hoping Alita 2 comes out eventually and elevates what the first established. What about you guys? Do you want to see a sequel to Alita? Sound off below!
