Steam Wallpaper App Users Bypass Chinese Porn Ban

In the west, we take our easy to access, free internet porn for granted. In China, it's a lot harder to get a hold of the good shit. Ever since the CCP passed a law outlawing what it called "spiritual pollution" in 1997, people caught with fap material can be struck with fines or even prison sentences. That's not to say porn hasn't already found a way around the Great Firewall of China.

At the time of writing, Wallpaper Engine is the 21st most-played game on Steam with 32,828 concurrent players. Last month it was even more popular. At first glance you can tell it's not even a game, just an app you happen to download through a virtual games marketplace. All you do with it is upload images or videos to share with other users to use as wallpapers. Sounds straightforward enough, until you find out 7.5% of its approximately 1.5 million user-submitted files (112,500) is tagged as NSFW. And most of those are hentai.

While a large portion of the uploaded content is labelled with Chinese and a lot of the Steam page reviews are also in Chinese, not all of the Wallpaper Engine community are happy with the flood of anime and porn they've caused. Steam is one of the few parts of the global web that can be accessed in China without a VPN, meaning the porn here exists within a grey area of sorts. As the secret spreads, however, it's possible web content watchdogs will catch wind of it eventually and ruin everyone's fun.

Have you guys ever been so horny you'd resort to downloading wallpapers to have something to jack off to? I used to do that with PS3 themes if that counts. Sound off below!
