Remember Balan Wonderworld? It feels like forever since that mess of a game was launched and it's already up there with Bubsy 3D and Sonic 06 in the platformer hall of shame. This is no Babylon's Fall kinda bad game with a forced mobile game-esque reward system and a shoddy graphical style, this was a hot mess of bad ideas and baffling decisions. No dialogue and therefore little plot, tons of useless power-ups, a weird "one button" control system that doesn't work and fucking song & dance numbers are just some of the things that made Balan such a memorably awful experience. 

Balan Wonderworld came from the mind of Yuji Naka, the guy who gave us Sonic over 30 years ago, and was last year published by Square Enix. His partnership with Square Enix didn't seem to work out, seeing as he left the company just months after the game's release. He's recently claimed on Twitter that he filed a lawsuit against the publisher because they allegedly removed him as the game's director six months before release due to disagreements with developer Arzest, and another incident over the game's soundtrack. He says that court documents show various Squenix higher-ups conspired to take away his status as director, leading to the game's sad state at launch. 

Naka also says he hired a lawyer to help him negotiate with the developers up until the game was released, saying "improving a game up until the very last minute is what a game creator is." Square Enix disagreed, and he subsequently took them to court. He didn't share any details about the results of the trial, but what he did say was "I think that Square Enix and Arzest are companies that do not care about games or game fans." Now, come on, Square Enix has done plenty of good since Balan Wonderworld! Let's see, they had... Avengers? Uh, Chocobo GP? I mean, Final Fantasy Origins: Stranger of Paradise? Fuckin' Babylon's Fall? Fuck it, Naka is completely on point with that one.
