One Punch Man Live-Action Recruits Rick & Morty Writers

Even if their halcyon days are over at this point, superhero movies continue to have an effect on the landscape of cinema. Hollywood adaptations of anime & manga are coming out increasingly often too, so a western take on a Japanese superhero series was more or less inevitable. And we're not only getting this here One Punch Man live-action from Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift director Justin Lin, but a My Hero Academia movie is also in the works.

A script for the One Punch Man movie had already been written by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, who also worked together on Venom and the Jumanji reboots. However, it's been confirmed by Hollywood Reporter that the movie is being rewritten by Community and Rick and Morty creator and writer Dan Harmon, as well as The Eric Andre Show and fellow Rick and Morty alumnus Heather Anne Campbell.

Since One Punch Man is more of a comedy with superheros than an actual superhero story (as opposed to a lot of superhero stories these days that think they're comedies), putting it in the hands of comedy writers seems like a safe bet to me. Besides, say what you will about Rick and Morty but Harmon and Campbell are both more than capable writers. We still have a lot to see from this project, particularly the cast and general tone, but who knows? We could have our next Alita: Battle Angel before long.
