Oldboy Gets New Series Adaptation

"The fuck has Oldboy got to do with anime, manga or hentai? It's a Korean movie smh"...

...is probably what you're thinking right now. And you're right; it is a Korean movie. A Korean movie based on a Japanese manga!

Astral Project author Garon Tsuchiya and artist Nobuaki Minegishi collaborated on Old Boy, the original manga, that is, in 1996. Like the 2003 Park Chan Wook movie based on it, it's about a guy who gets stupid drunk one night and finds himself kidnapped and imprisoned for over a decade. When he's finally released, he meets and falls in love with a mysterious young girl while trying to track down the person behind his captivity. There are a few differences between the manga and the remake, and the less said of the 2013 Spike Lee remake the better, with a key one being the manga didn't have the infamous daughter angle.

With that established, to celebrate the movie's 20 year anniversary, Lionsgate have announced an English-language miniseries adaptation directed by Park Chan Wook himself. Lionsgate Television executive Scott Herbst said:

"Park is one of the most visionary storytellers of our generation, and we’re excited to partner with him in bringing his cinematic masterpiece to the television screen. This series adaptation of Oldboy will feature the raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes, and visceral style that made the film a classic.”

If Park is involved, there's a high chance it won't be as bad as the aforementioned remake starring Josh Brolin. Who knows, maybe it could even be closer to the manga than the original movie. There's no info on cast & crew or a release date just yet, but are you guys on board for an Oldboy series? Let us know what you think in the comments!
