Netflix's One Piece Sets Sail in New Trailer

The One Piece live-action is real! After months of anticipation (the anxious kind), Netflix have finally dropped a trailer of their upcoming adaptation at their annual Tudum event, showing glimpses of the East Blue arc and the Straw Hat pirates in action. Ready? Here we go...

Netflix have burned us plenty of times before. Cowboy Bebop was famously marketed as having the approval of original creator Shinichiro Watanabe, but after it came out and flopped he said he approved out of obligation more than anything. This time, Netflix have been making a point of showing that One Piece creator Eichiro Oda has been involved every step of the way, even writing a letter to address fans' concerns. Cross-cultural differences are rarely brought up by major studios, so Oda speaking so transparently about how they've tried to overcome them might give some fans confidence in the series.

Speaking as someone who doesn't know a whole lot about One Piece, it looks... kinda fun? The action looks cool, the characters look like themselves and sailing-under-the-golden-sun vibes from the anime are definitely there. The script hasn't inspired much confidence in me, though. One of Bebop's biggest sins was the Whedonization of the dialogue, so hopefully they cut back on the cringe quips in the rest of the series.

One Piece surfaces August 31 on Netflix. What do you guys think of the trailer? Is it accurate to the source material? Has Oda's letter make you alter your expectations? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
