Netflix's arsenal of live-action series based on anime/manga is set to expand, and the latest adaptation from Japan is the classic 90s series Yu Yu Hakusho, by Hunter x Hunter author Yoshihiro Togashi.

Debuting in Shonen Jump in 1990, it tells the story of a high-school delinsquent named Yusuke Urameshi, who dies in a car accident while saving a child's life. In the underworld he's told he doesn't yet have a place in either heaven or hell and is given the opportunity to return to the world of the living. When he eventually does he's given the title of spirit detective, charged with investigating supernatural activity on earth and getting into fighting tournaments with his friends and all those shonen shenaningans.

The franchise has seen a long-running anime, a handful of OVAs and animated movies, audio CDs and video games, but this is the first time it's been officially translated into live-action (outside of stage plays). Netflix announced the series with an image that teased Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei and Kuwabara.

Since then they've revealed who's playing lead character Yusuke: actor & singer Takumi Kitamura, known for playing Hanegaki in the live-action Tokyo Revengers and for being in the band DISH//.

We also know whip-wielding fox demon Kurama is being played by Jun Shison, who voices lead character Hibiki in the 2022 anime Bubble.

That's all the cast revealed so far, but the other half of Team Urameshi will be announced in the next few days. The series will be directed by Sho Tsukikawa, who also directed the live-action adaptation of Let Me Eat Your Pancreas. Executive producer Kazutaka Sakamoto and studio Robot are also involved, and since both worked on the live-action Alice in Borderland I'll have high hopes for this. As high as they can be for a Netflix show, I mean.
