What's the deal with Netflix's obsession with CG in their original anime projects? Either they're partially 2D with usually distracting 3D thrown in, or they're completely CG adaptations of existing anime or manga like Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya or Appleseed Alpha. Now it's Gundam's turn to get a Netflix series from Namco Bandai Filmworks, called Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.
Requiem for Vengeance follows the story of Iria Sorari, a Zaku pilot from the Principality of Zeon encounters the Earth Federation's latest Gundam model while on a mission. Zeon are usually portrayed as the villains in most Gundam media, so it's rare to see a story about fighting the Federation from their perspective. But we gotta talk about that art style first, and I don't just mean that white girl with face tattoos and a septum ring.
Not only does it look like a video game cutscene so long it'd make Kojima jealous, it looks like one from the PS4/Xbone generation circa 2018. You know why? Because it was animated using Unreal Engine 5, the engine used for games like Tekken 8, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II and of course, Fortnite. Speaking of which, Bamco have partnered with Epic to integrate the assets used to make the series into Fortnite as a team deathmatch kinda mode, but if you ask me we'll see Gundams in Battle Royale before long.
So yes, Requiem for Vengeance looks like a video game because it was made using video game software, and will eventually become a video game. It's set to release on Netflix October 17, with the Fortnite collab to follow. What do you think of trailer? Do you think it looks too video gamey or is it just me? Sound off in the comments!
