Somehow, console wars are still a thing in the Year of Our Lord 2024. While the fanboys argue over their favorite systems and exclusives online, the companies themselves are planning how to get the other hand over their competitor. For Microsoft, the solution seems to be working with their competitors instead.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced on the Official Xbox Podcast earlier that a couple first-party Xbox games will be coming to PS5 and Switch. The move had been rumored for a while, but hearing it coming straight from Microsoft could have big repercussions for the gaming industry. The Xbox website says:
"To ensure long-term success for both Xbox and the industry as a whole, we must continue to evolve. Today we announced that we will expand the communities we reach: we are currently in the process of bringing four Xbox games to other platforms. These are titles which have been available to Xbox players for at least a year, including hidden gems that deserve to be experienced more widely, and live service games whose communities will benefit from welcoming even more players. We will share more details on these titles soon."
While they diidn't mention the games by name, it's heavily speculated they'll be Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment, while the live services are likely Sea of Thieves and Grounded. But this doesn't mean they're giving up on the hardware front; Spencer also confirmed they're currently working on the next-generation Xbox, which is supposedly the "largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation."
Whether Sony responds by announcing the PlayStation 6 soon or releasing Helldivers II or one of their smaller exclusives on Xbox remains to be seen, but maybe this could finally signal the end of console exclusivity. Whatever it is, I'm just hyped to finally play Hi-Fi Rush on my PS5. Mainly cos it's got Nine Inch Nails on the soundtrack and I fucking love me some Nine Inch Nails. In fact, Trent Reznor is in his goth femboy 90s era was responsible for my bisexual awakening. Also, the rhythm-based combat is pretty neat I guess.
What do you guys think of this? Are you looking forward to Xbox games on other consoles? Do you think it'll cause shockwaves within the games industry? Sound off below!
