Konami is Silent no More on Silent Hill

I'm just gonna say it: The 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 revived horror gaming. Many say true survival horror died off a long time ago, with most of the PS1 era's biggest horror franchises choosing to pursue action rather than ambience in the 2000s. In the 2010s,  horror games devolved into YouTuber jumpscare zoomer bait like FNAF or glorified hide & seek simulators like Outlast

After a string of disappointing instalments, Capcom breathed fresh life into the Resident Evil series with RE7: Biohazard, masterclass in blending modern game design with a classic survival horror framework. They followed it up with RE2make, which was all that as well as a reminder and celebration of the series' and genre's rich history. As goofy as it got since the shark-jump into full-on anime bullshit in Code VeronicaResident Evil was once taken seriously, and there's a reason the first two games (and 4) are seen as classics decades later. It's no surprise that it's inspired other horror franchises that fell off years ago to dust off their spookiest hats and give it another shot on modern machines. Thanks to RE2make, we've seen announcements for revivals of Alone in the DarkDead SpaceHouse of the Dead, and, finally - SILENT HILL!

There were rumours and leaks over the years, and plenty of doubt that Konami, the Japanese equivalent of EA, would succesfully bring back the beloved series. On a livestream yesterday, they revealed not just one game, but a litany of new Silent Hills in game form and otherwise. Without further ado; here are all the newly announced Silent Hill projects:

First up is a biggie. Silent Hill 2 is often held as not just the best in the series, but one of the greatest survival horror games of all time. Like RE2 before it, it's getting a full-on remake, looking more polished and haunting than ever. This is being developed by Polish studio Bloober Team, known for Layers of Fear and The Medium, using Unreal Engine 5. It'll be a timed exclusive on the PS5 before coming to Steam 12 months later, but the release date is still TBA.

Next is a new one. Stories Untold developer No Code and Stray creator Annapurna Interactive are collaborating on Silent Hill: Townfall. Not much more is known of this just yet.

Taking a break from the games, remember that 2006 movie adaptation that came out to a lukewarm reception? Then that got a sequel subtitled Revelations by a different director that was worse on pretty much every level? The director of the original Silent Hill movie, Christophe Gans (who made a live-action adaptation of the manga Crying Freeman in 1995, funnily enough) is returning for Return to Silent Hill. No cast or release dates yet, but it will be based on the story of SH2

Now for something different. Ascension is a "live, real-time interactive series" where players collectively watch and influence scenes as they play out. Sounds like a creepy Telltale series to me. Whatever it is, it'll be an anthology featuring the talents of J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, Dead by Daylight dev Behavior Interactive. It's the only thing announced with a release date, and even that was the vague suggestion of some point in 2023.

Last but certainly not least, the next mainline game is simply called Silent Hill f. Developed by Hong Kong studio NoeBards, it's set in 60s Japan and features a story by When They Cry author Ryukishi07. Also, it's produced by Motoi Okamoto, director of the most haunted game of all - Wii Play

It seems after years of sitting on the IP and not knowing what to do other than force your employees into crunch and creating pachinko machines that'll never see the light of day outside Japan, Konami chose to dole it out to several developers in the hopes that at least one of them will win back the fans. In any case, let's remember not to get too hyped up before seeing gameplay. Remember, this is the company that fucked over Hideo Kojima only to release Metal Gear Survive

What do you guys think? Which SH project are you most hyped for? Sound off below!
