Konami Confirms MGS Snake Eater Remake Has No New Voice Acting
By Yung Namahage • 1 year ago

As hyped as people were at the reveal of Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater last week (myself included), there was still the inevitibility that Konami, one of the most hated publishers in the games industry, will fuck it up somehow. Sure, the graphics look great and people are excited to see the chronological first entry in one of the most beloved gaming series of all time remade to modern standards, but've been burned by Konami like they were The Fear.

Now Konami has confirmed what we were all dreading: Hideo Kojima, the legendary auteur that gave us the Metal Gear franchise, is not involved in the remake whatsoever. But that's far from the only bombshell launched from their Davy Crockett; while the reveal proudly boasted that it'll feature the original voice cast, it conveniently forgot to mention that it'll reuse the original voice lines from the 2004 game. Meaning David Hayter, Lori Alan, Josh Keaton and the rest of the iconic cast weren't invited back to rerecord their lines.

We've had a lot of remakes lately, and most have chosen to either retain the voice cast of the original but get them to rerecord their lines (like MGS: The Twin Snakes did in 2004), or hire new facial models to base the characters on and provide new voice lines (like the Resident Evil remakes). The only recent remake I can think of that kept kept the same voice lines as the original is the famously bad XIII remake. Hopefully that's not a sign of things to come from Konami.

Shinji Mikami approved of Capcom remaking Resident Evil 4 and Glen Schofield enjoyed EA's Dead Space remake while he was working on Callisto Protocol, so Kojima's silence on MGS Δ is another omen hanging over Konami. On the bright side, it's possible that the resources they saved on recording voiceovers could be put toward other departments, which should be a lot with how verbose MGS can be, but they've got their work cut out to not make this feel like a hollow cash grab with voice lines that sound like they were recorded 20 years ago.

What do you think of MGS Δ's lack of new voice acting? Does it put you off getting the remake? Let us know below!
