We thought it was over. We thought we had seen the last of Sonic's horrifying form in the first trailer for the live-action movie, well before Paramount gave him a much-needed makeover. We were wrong. Leave it to Disney to remind us all of the past we tried so hard to forget.
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers is the latest reboot/remake/reimagining of a classic series to hit Disney+. It's a weirdly meta movie directed by The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer, not just about the titular chipmunk duo (voiced by John Mulaney and Andy Samberg respectively) as in-universe celebrities because of the aforementioned series, but animation in general and how the industry has changed over the last few decades. It's kinda like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in the sense a ton of famous characters make an appearance, not just ones owned by Disney (for now) but ones you'd be surprised to see in a Disney movie. That includes Sonic the Hedgehog, but not the same Sonic from any of the games or the one from the movies voiced by Ben Schwarz. Instead, we get Ugly Sonic. Seriously, that's what he's called here. He's voiced by Tim Robinson from I Think You Should Leave, who provides a perfectly schlubby contrast to Schwarz' squeaky clean speedster.
"Can't hurt my feelings if I'm in on the joke!"
Ugly Sonic is shown at a convention, signing posters for his "fans" who look equally amused and disgusted at his vaguely human proportions and teeth. He enjoys what little fame he has but still bemoans that time the internet caused an uproar over his first appearance. He isn't limited to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo or a one-off gag. He's integral to the main plot, helping out Chip & Dale in the movie's climax. Everyone else may have left Ugly Sonic back in 2019 (rightly so if you ask me), but it is wholesome in some way that he's finally had his time to shine.
What do you guys think of Ugly Sonic? Should Chip n' Dale have brought him back or is it time we collectively move on from this and forget everything, again? Sound off below!
