Tokyo man Akihiko Kondo became somewhat of an online celebrity since he took the term "waifu" to a whole new level in 2018. After spending 10 years of his life as a Vocaloid fan he held a ceremony where he "married" a Gatebox hologram device that projected an image of virtual idol Hatsune Miku. The guy spent years coming home from a hard day of work at his government office and being welcomed by his loving wife like most married men, only his wife is a little anime girl in a box. 

Four years is a long time in tech, and since their marriage things have changed quite a bit for the happy couple. Gatebox's license for Miku ran out in 2020, meaning they ended support for the limited run branded hologram model. He still greets her every day like normal, but all she has to say is "network error." The 38-year-old says: "My love for Miku hasn't changed. I held the wedding ceremony because I thought I could be with her forever." 

While he can't hear her voice coming from the hologram unit any longer, he still hears it through her music videos and video games on a daily basis. When asked about otaku fandom, he said: "It's not that people can't live in society because they're engrossed in a two-dimensional world, but rather, there are cases where people become captivated as they search for a place for themselves in video games and anime, because reality is too painful for them. I was one of those people. People who don't understand the background probably think, 'Games are disrupting their lives,' but that's not the case." Guy's loyal if nothing else.
