Here Comes Another Speed Racer Live-Action
By Yung Namahage • 2 years ago

Back in the 60s, a little racing anime called Mach GoGoGo became the first show of its kind to enter western pop culture. Retitled Speed Racer, it got syndicated on American TV and eventually became one of the most iconic cartoons from that era, alongside Scooby-Doo and Johnny Quest

Decades later, when anime became a lot more mainstream in the west, it had a live-action adaptation from The Matrix's Wachowskis in 2008. As far as anime live-actions go, people seem to hold that one in relatively high regard despite a mixed critical reception at the time. Maybe it's the video game-y racing scenes or the anti-authoritarian themes the Wachowskis are known for, but people have been clamoring for a sequel of some kind in the last few years. Now, their wish is being granted. Kind of.

A live-action series based on the animated series based on Tatsuo Yoshida's manga is in the works at Apple, with J.J Abrams attached as executive producer under his Bad Robot banner for Warner Bros' Television studio. Ron Fitzgerald (Friday Night Lights) and Hiram Martinez (the Snowpiercer series) have been named as the show's writers and showrunners.

No other cast or crew have been announced yet, and it's not known if it'll have anything to do with the 2008 movie. Still, if it's half as wild as the original series I'll keep an eye on this.
