Harley Quinn & Joker Get Isekai'd in New DC Anime

Japanese manga & anime are popular in the west, of course, but some people forget that Japanese audiences love western comics in return. Series like My Hero Academia and One Punch Man draw influence from Marvel and DC, and both comics companies have had several anime adaptations of their characters created by Japanese studios, like 2018's Batman Ninja. Now, DC have announced their latest attempt at putting a Japanese twist on their iconic characters.

Like Batman NinjaSuicide Squad ISEKAI tells you everything you need to know in its name. It seems the Suicide Squad, an elite taskforce of captive supervillains forced to carry out the US government's dirty work also known as Task Force X, somehow wind up in another world, or isekai. The reveal trailer doesn't say much beyond that, but here it is.

The only members of the Squad shown so far are the toxic power couple of Joker and Harley, and let me just say that's a damn fine Harley design they got there. Definitely looking forward to the R34. The Joker I can take or leave, but he looks like a slightly better, if not animefied version of whatever Jared Leto was going for. The isekai world looks fairly typical isekai fantasy, with dragons, porcine orcs and armored knights, but I'm down for causing chaos in a familiar setting. The Squad's fearsome handler Amada Waller also shows up; so maybe she sends Task Force X into this isekai world for some type of mission?

Wit Studio are producing the series with Gintama and Jujutsu Kaisen episode director Eri Osada at the helm, and Vivy Prototype light novel authors Eiji Umehara and Tappei Nagatsuki writing the scripts. Seiren character designer Naoto Hosada is designing the characters, and original characters are being created by Psycho-Pass character designer Akira Amano, who also drew this cool promo poster.

What I'm hoping for out of this is something that takes the chaotic energy of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad and puts it in a typical isekai world. What I'm not hoping for is an excuse for JxHQ shippers to get cringier than ever. What do you guys think of Suicide Squad ISEKAI, and what would you like to see from it? Sound off below!
