It's been a while since we last heard of a Japanese retailer or service provider forced to remove or change the way users can pay for products at the behest of western credit card companies. Now It's the turn of Comic Toranoana, a famous doujin and manga purveyor in Akihabara.
Toranoana announced they'll no longer be accepting Visa and Mastercard on mail order purchases, starting August 18. The change comes into affect just after Comiket, the massive semiannual doujin convention in Tokyo. This means people who don't live within the Akihabara area and aren't attending Comiket who only have one of of those cards are SoL.
This time, the change was Toranoana's decision to prevent the credit card companies stuffing up controversy, and users in Japan can still order from the store using their Visa or Mastercards through Paypal or buying payment credits. International users aren't as lucky. Toranoana offer global shipping only through a proxy courier service, but these credit card changes give users one more hurdle if they went to order from Toranoana.
Have you guys heard of or used Toranoana before? Let us know in the comments!
