Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed Director's Cut Comes to the West

The Akiba's Trip franchise can be a little hard to follow for a series about ripping people's clothes off. The first game, simply titled Akiba's Trip, was originally released on PSP in 2011, followed by a PSP rerelease a year later and a remake for other platforms a decade later. Then there was a Japan-only mobile game, followed by Akiba's Trip 2 in 2013. Then that got a PS4 port a year later, before being released in the west as Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed. Then another mobile game, and finally the most recent game in the series, Akiba's Beat, came out for PS4 and PS Vita (remember that?) back in 2017.

With that established, it's the second mainline entry, Undead & Undressed, that Acquire chose to give the Director's Cut treatment. It's about a weeb who goes to the Tokyo entertainment district Akihabara, and unwittingly falls into a conspiracy surrounding artificial vampiric imposters called synthisters replacing humans and surrounds himself with a harem of freedom fighters. The synthisters happen to be vulnerable to sunlight, and can be defeated by ripping their clothes off and exposing their skin. That's right, fanservice by combat, baby.

The Director's Cut includes rerecorded voiceovers, all previously included DLC and brand new content. The story has been reworked to include a new route based on a certain fan favorite, non-romanceable waifu in the original game, Finnish maid cosplayer Kati Raikkonen, which will apparently set up the future of the franchise. Curiously, the Kati route is included as standard in the Switch version, but requires a seperate DLC download on other platforms. Publisher XSEED recently revealed the Day 1 Edition, which comes with a physical copy of the game plus a soundtrack CD, 9 original art cards by various Japanese artists, and a collector's box, and is exclusive to North America.

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed Director's Cut comes to Switch, PC and PS4 on August 1. Will you be checking it out? Sound off in the comments!
